David Hightower was 16 years old when in 2003 he shot his mother in the head with an assault rifle at their home in Watauga, Texas. Two friends told authorities that on the morning of Feb. 26 2003, Hightower was on the phone with them when he put down the telephone and seconds later they heard a loud bang. Hightower then picked up the telephone and told his friends that he was going to kill himself. Prosecutors charged him as an adult and he was sentenced to death for the murder.
